Lucrezia is the creator of the popular YouTube channel ‘Learn Italian with Lucrezia’. In this interview you’re going to learn: – What inspired Lucrezia to start her YouTube channel – What the actual business is behind her brand – Tips for building an online audience
Lucrezia started her YouTube channel when she was still at university, where she studied translation. She always wanted to become a translator but that changed seven years ago, soon after she started her YouTube channel.
She often watched educational videos on YouTube and that’s how she came up with the idea to start her own channel as a supplement to her existing blog. She knew that in order to stand out, she needed to start out teaching something very specific. That’s why she initially decided to teach only Italian grammar.
A content strategy that changed over time
When Lucrezia started, she wasn’t really focusing on what the ‘competition’ was doing. She didn’t have any ambitious plans for her channel and she’d started publishing videos simply because she wanted to. In the beginning, her lessons would all follow a particular pattern and were aimed at one specific audience, but as her audience grew she noticed that this was no longer appropriate as her students’ fluency levels varied so much. That’s when she decided to create videos based on what her audience was asking her for. This strategy worked well because in time her channel became the biggest YouTube channel for Italian learners.
The importance of being friendly, the secret sauce?
Lucrezia doesn’t really know why her channel has become so successful. She thinks that the main reason is that many people can relate to her and see her as ‘their Italian friend’. She gives her audience the feeling that she’s always there to help. Her videos also have a positive vibe, which people seem to like.
What is the business?
Although Lucrezia generates income from YouTube AdSense, even with over 250K subscribers, that isn’t enough to live off, in her opinion. She is a certified Italian teacher and teaching is what she loves. That’s why the majority of her income comes from teaching Italian online, mainly on iTalki.com. She usually teaches for three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon. The rest of the time, she’s busy shooting and editing videos for her YouTube channel.
The benefits of being a ‘Langpreneur’
Lucrecia says that she gets to live off the money she makes from what loves doing.
‘’If you teach in a classroom you have to follow the syllabus. On YouTube I can be creative and create whatever I want. I can also organize my own schedule and life. My teaching business gives me a lot of freedom’’
Tips for building an audience
I asked Lucrezia if she had any tips for people who want to grow an online audience:
It’s important to upload on a regular schedule because it creates trust. It’s like a friend showing up on a regular basis.
Lucrezia’s videos are also very informal, which makes her feel very relatable and real.
She also mentions the importance of engaging with your audience and answering their questions.
Focus on a certain group of people. Lucrezia mainly focuses on intermediate and advanced learners.
There has to be a balance between what your audience wants and what you like creating.
Don’t focus on growing more than two social media accounts, unless you have someone who can help you with it. Lucrezia only focuses on YouTube and Instagram.
